St. Mary's Parks & RecreationWelcome to the St. Mary's Recreation website. DANCE CLASSESMaureen Fraser with School of Dance is putting on Dance classes in Melrose at the Greenfield Oldsters Club on Wednesdays for 8 weeks starting on May 2, 2012. Types of dance are ballet, hip hop, step, etc. Come on out and learn to dance up a storm! On the last day of class, participants will be involved in a dance recitle to show off what they have learned. These classes are for all ages. They are as follows: Ages 3+: 4:45 pm. Ages 8+: 5:45 pm. Cost: $75.00 per person. Must make payment on first night of the class. Need a minimum of five participants for each class. Please wear appropriate clothing to dance in. ST. MARY'S SPRING BAZAAR (YARD SALE) RecPlex,
Sherbrooke. Saturday, June 9, 9:00 am to 12 Noon. ATTENTION VENDORS!!! This is
the time to sell, promote, and distribute. Tables will be set up at the RecPlex
for you to sell/buy whatever you like. Please call the recreation department to
reserve a table for $10 by Wednesday June 6. Hoping to get baked goods, yard
sale items, fresh produce, jewelry, and more. So, get the word out!! For the
people who do not have a table, come and see what there is, be social, and have
a great day. Zumba Fitness Shops FundraiserThe Zumbathon fundraiser event was held at St. Mary's Academy in Sherbrooke, NS. It was on April 21, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We would like to thank everyone for attending as this was a very successful event. This event was hosted by Maria Jose Tate and Fun with SHOPS. Donations were at the door. Door prizes and refreshments!!! Zumba instructor: Maria Jose Tate. St. Mary’s PANDAS Volleyball Club TournamentThe St. Mary's Pandas Volleyball Team competed on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at St. Mary’s Academy against teams from around the area including Antigonish and Port Hawesbury. This was the Pandas first appearance in game action! Club creator, Josh Corkum was very pleased in how his PANDAS competed. They played well as a team, and this was a great introductory tournament for them to be in. The club was just created this year with an under 14 girls team developing from just a recreational volleyball program put on by the municipal recreation department. The girls showed a strong interest in volleyball and are very committed to learning the game, in addition, a club was created. We are looking forward to next year as well as increasing the volleyball club with more players involved. GOSHEN EVENT!!The yearly Spring Program put on by the Ladies Fellowship of Goshen Gospel Church will be held at 7 pm. An Alice in Wonderland theme will appeal to all ages, and the girls from the youth group will be helping with the presentation. Bring your mother, daughter, friend – or come by yourself. Just come! If you have a special teapot bring it for the display table. No admission charge. Refreshments served. NEW!! St.Mary’s Youth Running ClubIn partnership with the Nova Scotia Dr. Association, Run for life and the St. Mary’s Academy Track Program the Municipality of St. Mary’s Recreation Department will be offering an after school running program. This program is for students grades 7-12 and will be held Mondays after school from 2:30-3:30 at the St. Mary’s Academy. Runners are again encouraged to dress for both indoor and out door conditions. For more information or to register please contact Emily Morton. Jack Frost Fun 5k Run & 1k WalkWe Would Like To Thank all you runners and walkers out there! St. Mary’s Recreation Department held its first ever Jack Frost Fun Run on March 4th, 2012. This event was free of charge however donations to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society were encouraged. We foundered around $2,400 for Breast Cancer at this event! What Is Active Transportation?Active transportation refers to any form of human-powered transportation – walking, cycling, using a wheelchair, in-line skating or skateboarding. There are many ways to engage in active transportation, whether it is walking to the bus stop, or cycling to school/work. So, get out there and be involved in active transportation!! St. Mary’s Running ClubRunning is a great way to stay in shape, meet new people and most importantly have fun! St. Mary’s Recreation will be holding a girls only fitness class for girls age 12-18. This little guy showed the St. Mary’s Recreation Department that he came up with the best snowman, or whatever he decided to create out of snow. All you had to do is create something in the snow, take a picture of it, and send it in to the recreation department. So, he created it, and sent it in to be judged. Tumble BugsTumble bugs is an introductory program designed to teach the basics of physical literacy to pre school children ages 3-5 years old. Tumble bugs is a safe, inclusive and most importantly fun, approach to laying the building blocks for a physically active life style. Take The Roof Off WinterRecreation Nova Scotia's Take the Roof Off Winter campaign has started again this year and are looking for supporters to sign up to take part. Schools, community groups, recreation departments, clubs, organizations and businesses across Nova Scotia are signing up to “Take the Roof off Winter”, a physical activity campaign designed to help Nova Scotians of all ages improve their health and quality of life by getting outdoors and being more active this winter. This year's theme is "Snowshoeing in Parks and Protected Areas" and Antigonish County Recreation is excited to announce that we have purchased snow shoes to lend out to community members free of charge! Take the Roof off Winter campaign backgrounder: Take the Roof off Winter is a physical activity promotions campaign designed to help Nova Scotians of all ages improve their health and quality of life by getting out and active during the winter months. The program delivered by Recreation Nova Scotia in partnership with Nova Scotia Department of Health and Wellness and sponsored by Nova Scotia Egg Producers runs to March 21st. Campaign supporters are municipalities, community groups, schools, businesses, families, groups of friends etc. that agree to coordinate events/promotions and/or activities during the TTROW campaign. Supporters can also sign up to organize a Winter Walk Day. Supporters are recognized on Take The Roof of Winter made official members of the RED CAP OUTDOOR CLUB and are provided with Take the Roof Off Winter promotional materials to use and distribute including posters, and Take the Roof Off Winter toques. To help groups and organizations participate in the campaign and build more physical activity into their daily routine, RNS has developed the Take the Roof Off Winter website Take The Roof of Winter. The site provides tips and ideas on organizing and hosting outdoor events and activities as well as a venue for TTROW supporters and participants to post photos and stories of fun events. Campaign ambassadors (recreation professionals and volunteers) are available across the province to provide support to groups looking to organize events in their communities. There is also an opportunity to sign up for Winter Walk Day, a partnership with Active & Safe Routes to School, and Heart & Stroke Walkabout. Prizes to be won: Creative Expressions Contest – an opportunity for children ages 5 to 12 to be creative! Children are asked to draw or sketch a picture about what playing and being active outdoors means to them Winners, selected from a random draw, receive a recreation/sport gift pack courtesy of Canadian Tire Jumpstart. Recreation And Leisure Leaders And/or InstructorsThe Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s Recreation Department is currently looking for instructors or leaders in the area that are able to instruct or lead a course/activity/event/program, and/or club in their expertise. So, if you are interested in teaching, leading, or instructing something that you are able to, we would love to hear from you. Please contact the Recreation Department at 522-2598. We are looking for instructors or leaders in areas that interest you and are able to lead. Equipment is available for loan-out as long as it's not currently being used by St.Mary's Recreation programs. Equipment is available for loan-out for up to one week, but is subject to change based on amount of requests for equipment. If you may or may not have known, St. Mary’s Recreation has a facebook page where people can go on and get updates on programs and activities that are going on within the Municipality. On there you will get updates on when things are cancelled, reminders of when programs are, pictures, etc. All you have to do is join the facebook page are you are set! Type in St. Mary’s Recreation and like it, or join group. St. Mary's Recreation has it's own page on Facebook. We'll be using it to advertise our programs, employment opportunities, special events, cancellations and much more.
