The Community Development & Recreation Department is excited to get community and school based programs back up and running for the fall!
Family Free Skates - Saturday's 1-2pm
Free skates are back at the St. Mary's Recplex! Skates will take place each Saturday at a new time, starting at 1:00 p.m. Skates are free for all, all season long. There are limited amount of helmets and skates available for use free of charge. All skater must wear helmets on the ice, no exceptions. On December 23rd, join us for a special holiday skate and enjoy a free hot chocolate! Free Skates are made possible through financial support from the Province of Nova Scotia.
Learn to Skate & Learn to Play Hockey
Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey will once again be returning to the St. Mary's Recplex. This program is FREE (thanks to the community) and will begin on November 17th and continue for 12 weeks. Learn to Skate is for youth ages 3-6 who are in the early stages of learning the skate. Children only require skates and a hockey helmet. Learn to Play Hockey is for youth ages 5+ who are in the early stages of learning to play hockey. Hockey equipment is recommended.
Make it Take it Craft Program - Friday's 7-8pm
An all ages craft program will take place at the St. Mary's Recplex in the warm room on Friday's at 7 p.m. This is a free program. Parents are invited to come out and watch some hockey while children make some crafts in the warm room!

Active Transportation refers to any form of human powered transportation such as walking, cycling, using a wheelchair, skateboarding or snowshoeing. The Municipality is currently working on an Active Transportation Plan to connect Old Road Hill to Hwy. 7 and Main Street. Improving accessibility will provide opportunities for safe travel for visitors and residents.
The Sherbrooke Water Utility will be replacing ageing waterline infrastructure this fall/winter. Construction is slated to start on Monday, October 30th, 2017.
Director of Community Development and Recreation (Maternity Leave)
Sherbrooke, Nova Scotia
Full Time, Term Position
Working under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Community Development and Recreation will plan and manage recreational and community development programming in accordance with the Shared Strategy for Advancing Recreation in Nova Scotia.
The Community Development and Recreation Director will work with residents and community organizations to take collective action towards generating a better St. Mary's for the future.
This position shall represent a positive image for St. Mary's by maintaining liaison with the public, community groups, businesses and other Provincial and Federal Government Agencies/Departments, local School, and outside Recreation Associations to enhance the overall community development and recreation opportunities for the citizens of the Municipality.
A degree or diploma in: recreation, community development, human kinetics or related field as well as certification in recreation training and past experience in municipal recreation or related work is desired. Candidates with a combination of related education and work experience will be considered.
Skills and special knowledge:
Required to have experience in coordinating initiatives, project management, planning, evaluation, research and working with community groups.Requires excellent public relations and communication skills, both oral and written. As well as proven training/experience in recreation and organizing and implementing recreation programs and activities.Must possess strong supervisory, leadership, planning, organizational and administrative skills and ability to multi-task.Computer Skills EssentialMust be able to work independently and as part of team
