Local Project to Improve Rural Internet Access

The Municipality was successful in securing a grant under the Provincial Government's Municipal and Communtiy Rural High Speed Internet Fund.  Read more about the announcement here.

Active Living Programming Survey

The Community Development & Recreation Department is currently collecting feedback from residents on what programs they would like to see in the community. Our Active Living Strategy has focus areas such as walking, family friendly opportunities and opportunities for 55+ & youth. This survey will help us determine what specific programs you would like to see!

Please take 5 minutes to fill out this online survey (click link below) or you can find the survey in our newsletter and return a hard copy to the municipal office.

You can fill out the survey anonymously, or include your name to be entered to win a $50 gift card to Sport Chek.

Antigonish Community Transit Society (ACTS) Meeting

The Antigonish Community Transit Society (ACTS) will be holding a public information session on October 25th at 6:30pm at the St. Mary's Municipal Council Chambers. They are exploring the idea of extending the ACTS service to the District of St. Mary's.

Active Transportation

Active Transportation refers to any form of human powered transportation such as walking, cycling, using a wheelchair, skateboarding or snowshoeing. The Municipality is currently working on an Active Transportation Plan to connect Old Road Hill to Hwy. 7 and Main Street. Improving accessibility will provide opportunities for safe travel for visitors and residents.

Scope:

Working under the direction of the Community Development & Recreation Director, Student Recreation Leaders will provide leadership at a variety of recreational programs throughout St. Mary's Municipality.

Fall Programs 2017

The Community Development & Recreation Department is excited to get community and school based programs back up and running for the fall!

Salsation - Monday's 6-7pm
Salsation is a fun and addictive dance fitness program based on functional training with a very strong focus on musicality and lyrical expression as well as how the human body functions. The many benefits of Salsation Classes are to improve musicality and mobility, burn calories and of course get fit which will result in a happier life. No dance experience required! Salsation will take place each week on Monday evenings from 6-7 p.m. Five, 10 and 20 class punch cards are available for purchase at the Municipal Office. You can use punch cards for both Salsation and POUND Fitness classes. To learn more about this program, visit salsationfitness.com. Salsation will be taught by Instructors Abigayl Tate and Maria Tate.

Open Gym/Free Play - Tuesday's 6-7pm
Open Gym will be returning this fall to St. Mary's Education Centre and Academy. The program will take place each Tuesday evening from 6-7 p.m. starting September 19th and running 10 weeks until November 21st. If this program is successful, it will return in the New Year. All school aged children are invited to attend. Parents are encouraged to take part as well. Registration forms are necessary for all students. Please note, students will not be permitted to enter the school until the program begins

POUND Fitness - Wednesday's 6-7pm
POUND is the world's first cardio jam session inspired by the infectious, energizing and sweat-dripping fun of playing the drums. This program will take place at St. Mary's Education Centre/Academy on Wednesday evenings from 6-7 p.m. Five, 10 and 20 class punch cards are available for purchase at the Municipal Office. You can use punch cards for both POUND Fitness and Salsation classes. To learn more about this program, visit poundfit.com.

Starting in October

Trail Blazers – Monday's 2:30-4pm
We are bringing back our Outdoor Education program, Trail Blazers this fall! We are currently looking for volunteers with an interest in the outdoors who would be interested in leading one week of our 8 week program. If you are an outdoor enthusiast and would like pass on your knowledge to children in grades 4-7, please contact the Community Development & Recreation Department. Trail Blazers will take place on Monday's in Stonewall Park starting on October 2nd.

Happy Feet - Thursday's 2:30-3:15pm
Happy Feet is a free, afterschool running program designed to get kids moving and inspire children to be physically active for life! This program is open to children in grades primary to 3. Happy Feet will take place on Thursday's at St. Mary's Education Centre/Academy from 2:30-3:15 p.m. starting on October 5th and running for 8 weeks. Participants are encouraged to dress for both indoor and outdoor running conditions as program leaders may switch depending on the weather. Water bottles are encouraged as well. Registration forms will be sent home with children.

After the Bell - Pizza Party
After the Bell will be returning this fall for youth ages 13-18! ATB is a program for youth, by youth. It takes place after school and in the evenings. The program includes active living activities, opportunity to build new friendships, volunteerism and also gives youth a safe and supportive environment to learn and grow. To kick things off, we want to hear from our youth by hosting a pizza party this October. Keep your eyes out for a date.
