The Municipality of St. Mary’s has seven districts each represented by a councillor who are elected for a four year term. The boundaries of these districts can be viewed on the electoral district map.

Regular monthly meetings of the St. Mary's Municipal Council are held on the second Monday of every month at 4pm with the exclusion of December & August. Committee of the Whole meetings are held on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 4pm with the exclusion of December & August. All Council meetings are open to the public and we encourage your attendance.

Policies & Bylaws

The Council of the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s adopts bylaws concerning various community issues in accordance with the Municipal Government Act of Nova Scotia. It is important to note that not all matters in St. Mary’s are under the jurisdiction of these bylaws. The Municipal Government Act and other provincial and federal laws supersede our bylaws. As a result, our bylaws only cover items not already regulated by those higher authorities. View Municipal Documents for more information.

Presentations to Council

No more than two (2) public presentations will be scheduled on the agenda of Committee/Council meetings. Each presentation is limited to fifteen (15) minutes followed by an appropriate amount of time for the presenter to respond to questions from Council. The Municipal Clerk shall be provided a copy of the presentation to be retained for background information.

Strategic Plan

In 2016 the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s developed a 10-year strategic plan.  The plan was created through input from municipal council, municipal staff and members of the public. The plan is intended to guide the work of council and staff over the next 10 years in order to establish a collective vision, plan for the future and communicate priorities.
