Warden's Message
Welcome,
On behalf of Council and Staff for the Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s, welcome. Whether it’s the ocean shores, beaches and lighthouses, the breathtaking view, the hills or the St. Mary River, world renowned for its Salmon Fishing-we hope your time here will be a trip to inspire many more visits or even a decision to call it home.
Perhaps you have recently looked East as an idea to live on the wonderful shore or unwind from years in the city hussle. If you are looking for a place where you can work remotely, join your colleagues virtually and enjoy the lifestyle that St. Mary’s uniquely offers we have news for you:
The District is currently in Round 1 of launching high-speed internet for the entire Municipality, with a completion date of July 2022 for most areas. By the end of 2023 the province of Nova Scotia will be 99% covered with fiber optic high-speed internet, allowing your virtual office to provide a space were surfing, biking or hiking can easily become your lunch break reality. We are excited to grow our population, seeking to attract new residents, families and businesses and would love you to join us in our literal natural playground. With our Streetccapes Plan entering it second development phase, you can see it well underway with the infrastructure: street paving; sidewalks, parks, Old Road Hill, Main Street Sherbrooke, Port Bickerton Lighthouse Road, freshly paved parking lots and more!
There is much to see and do in our area, from touring the historic Sherbrooke Village, literally allowing you to regularly enter the time of confederation, or shopping the local Saturday Market, enjoying the beautiful coastal drives, and perhaps in the near future observing the belugas and other aquatic creatures that have been freed from captivity and loving the World's first ever Whale Sanctuary off the shores of Wine Harbour/PortHilford.
Enjoy a hike or bike along the nature trail, camp along the way, and even make your way from Historic Sherbrooke Village to Guysborough along the gorgeous sealine with a variety of sites to stop and take in the views, camp, or cook. Come by the Municipal Office where you can rent recreational equipment from kayaks to fishing rods. We want you to enjoy each moment as a resident or visitor to the area.
Whether its fishing, hiking, biking, a kayak or canoe route that brings you to the District of St. Mary's, we hope that you enjoy your stay or even call it home for good.
Wherever you are from, or going, we welcome you to the Municipality of the District of Saint Mary’s. As Covid has left us with much to think about and much to regain we welcome you to restore – on the Eastern Shore.
