Municipal Awareness Week: Spotlight on the Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC)

During Municipal Awareness Week, The Municipality of the District of St. Mary’s is highlighting some of the key roles that help keep our community safe, connected, and resilient. Today’s spotlight is on our Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) — the person responsible for preparing our municipality to respond to emergencies and recover from them efficiently and effectively.
The EMC plays a vital role in ensuring our community is ready for anything — from severe weather events and power outages to large-scale emergencies. This includes developing and updating the Municipal Emergency Response Plan, coordinating training and exercises for staff and first responders, and working closely with local, provincial, and federal partners to ensure a coordinated response.
Beyond planning and response, the EMC focuses heavily on prevention and public education, helping residents understand risks and how to prepare their families for unexpected events. Their goal is to build a resilient community where everyone knows how to respond safely and efficiently when emergencies arise.
Through careful planning, collaboration, and leadership, the Emergency Management Coordinator helps keep our municipality safe — no matter what challenges come our way
