Municipal Awareness week Feature: Department of Community Development & Recreation
The Municipality’s Department of Community Development & Recreation plans and runs programs and events that help people stay active, connect with others, and enjoy community life. The Department offers programs for all ages, including the Before and After Program, Coyotes House League Hockey, the Fun & Fit Series, Youth Club, Eco Explorers, Summer Day Camp, and a full range of softball programs. This summer, an Adult Softball League returned for the first time in many years, starting with four teams with players aged 13 to 60+, with games held every Tuesday night at the Veteran's Memorial Softball Field in Spanish Ship Bay. Youth softball ran two nights a week, with one night focused on skills development and the other on games, while T-ball was offered for children aged 3–6. Based on this year’s success, softball programming is planned to return next year, continuing to provide opportunities for players of all ages to participate. The department also manages special events, facility rentals, and volunteer support. It is led by the Director of Community Development & Recreation and supported by the Active Living Coordinator and part-time staff, including BAP Staff and Recreation Leaders, who run programs and events. With experience in managing facilities, events, and community partnerships, the department works to make programs fun, safe, and open to everyone.
